Sugah Cookies

This is Ava-baby's favorite recipe for the classic sugar cookie.
Adapted from Martha Stewart:

Ingredients:
2 sticks of butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling and cutting)

Makes quite a bit of dough, so I half-ed the recipe and it needed about 2 cups of flour; also, if the dough is too soft - 10 minutes in the fridge will make it easier to work with.

Directions:
Preheat over to 350 degrees

Use an electric mixer to cream butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy; then add egg and vanilla until combined. Finally, slowly add flour until incorporated.

Roll and cut out cookies, place on parchment-lined baking sheets.

Bake 7-12 minutes

Let cool and decorate

For the royal icing, I used 2 egg whites and a dash of vanilla to about a box of powdered sugar; I actually messed up making my icing so any other royal icing recipe should be used.

  1. this is the same sugar cookie recipe that i now use EVERY time. I've tried every recipe out there and this is by far the BEST. Ive always liked bridgetts from Bake@350 witch is close to this one but hers has baking powder. I started reading about how baking powder and other leavening agents cause cookies to lose their defined edges. So when I came across "martha's number 2" recipe I was like, "YUP, Exactly what I thought!!" and I'm sure u went through this exact same process.
